Scope
This First Aid Policy outlines how we provide first aid.
We follow the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 and guidance from UK Sport and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Objectives
Provide adequate first aid provision at training sessions, competitions, and events.
Ensure prompt and appropriate first aid treatment for injuries or illnesses that happen in club environments or during off-site activities.
Maintain easy-to-find, fully stocked first aid kits and ensure accessibility.
Ensure staff and volunteers are adequately trained and aware of first aid procedures.
Record and report all incidents and injuries as per statutory requirements.
Responsibilities
Club Committee / Management:
Follow relevant legislation.
Appoint a qualified First Aid Coordinator.
Ensure enough trained First Aiders at sessions.
First Aid Coordinator:
Maintain records of qualified first aiders.
Oversee first aid supplies.
Schedule training and refreshers for first aiders.
Coaches and Volunteers:
Know the designated first aiders.
Know where the first aid equipment and emergency contacts are.
Assist first aiders where appropriate and ensure incidents are reported.
First Aiders:
Hold a valid first aid qualification (e.g., Emergency First Aid at Work, or Sport-specific First Aid).
Respond promptly to injuries and illnesses.
Complete Accident/Incident Report Forms and notify relevant authorities if necessary.
Participants, parents/guardians:
- Provide accurate information about medical conditions.
- Ensure specific medical equipment is accessible during sessions. E.g., asthma spray.
First Aid Kit
An easily accessible First Aid Kit will be available at all training and event locations.
First aid kits will be checked and restocked monthly by the First Aid Coordinator.
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available on-site at Hillbrow Health and Wellbeing if required.
At least one qualified first aider will be present at each session.
Emergency contact details of all participants will be kept up-to-date and accessible to staff.
Reporting
All accidents and incidents must be recorded on an Accident Report Form.
The report must include: date, time, location, details of the incident, first aid administered, and any follow-up actions.
Serious incidents must be reported to the HSE under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013).
Parents/guardians of junior members must be notified of any injury or incident involving their child.
Emergency Procedure
In the event of a serious injury or illness:
Call 999 for emergency services.
Administer first aid within the scope of their training.
Clear the area to ensure safety and privacy.
Notify the next of kin or emergency contact.
Record the incident and inform the club’s Safeguarding or Welfare Officer if necessary.
Training and Qualifications
First aiders must hold a current first aid certificate, renewed every 3 years.
Recommended training includes Emergency First Aid at Work, Paediatric First Aid, and Sports First Aid.
The club will facilitate access to relevant training for staff and volunteers.
Safeguarding confidentiality
All first aiders must be aware of and adhere to the club’s Safeguarding Policy.
Medical information must be treated confidentially and shared only with appropriate personnel.
